About the Business

Founded in 1903 when Reginald Gedye opened a branch office of Carrthurs and Gedye, a former Liverpool based solicitor's practice. Grange-over-Sands on the southern edge of the Lake District became the principal office of Gedye and Sons. His two sons continued the business until the death of John, the then senior partner aged 86 in 1995.

One of the former partners Gordon Ashton OBE enhanced the firm's reputation by writing several books about the law and the elderly. This included the prestigious Law Society's Elderly Client Handbook. In 1992 he retired from the firm to take up his appointment as a District Judge and subsequently he also became a Judge of the Court of Protection.

Stuart Harling joined the firm in 1972 and retired in 2009. His love for the firm saw him continue to act as a consultant and after a further three years as the firm's practicing consultant he fully retired in the autumn of 2012.
